She was baptized at Mohill, at Co Leitrim, on 7 August 1881.² Her birth was registered on 21 September 1881. Although born in August 1881 Mary's birth was registered in September with a false birth date of 7th September.⁵ She died on 14 July 1883 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Cause of death was Whooping Cough, 3 weeks, uncertified, no medical attendant. Mary's death was registered under the surname Nicholas.⁶

Mary Diffley died on 12 June 1871 at Cloonart North, Mohill, Co Longford, Ireland. The transcript gives her maiden name as Diffly. She was survived by her widower Patrick Cox.⁵

Thomas Diffley married Ellen Keane on 6 February 1887 at Gortletteragh, Cloone, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The witnesses were James O'Neill and Mary Austin. This latter surname is very unclear.⁴ No further information on Thomas and Ellen has been found after February 1887; they do not appear to be on the 1901 Census.³
