Bridget at home in Allen Park, around 1976
Her common name was Bridie and this was used for her by people (except from the Doyle family line) who knew her in Dublin throughout her life there. Her common name was Bridgie and this was used for her by people from Leitrim throughout her life.
Bridget Doyle was born on 31 January 1927 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.1
She was baptised on 1 February 1927. Roman Catholic.3,4

Bridget was listed on the roll as a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 1932 to 1940.3 She resided at Gortnalamph, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 1939 to 1945, where she went to be trained by Aunt Bee as a dressmaker. According to Bridgie the training was minimal, and she spent much of her time simply as a helping hand on the McDermott farm.3 As of after 1944, Bridget Doyle was also known as Bridie, a name she acquired sometime after she first went to Dublin. This is what her husband Tom called her, as did most of those who knew her in Dublin.
Bridget together with her sister Elizabeth Doyle worked and lived at Brewery Road, Stillorgan from October 1944 to 1954.3
Bridget Doyle lived from 1945 to 1956 at Brewery Road, Stillorgan, Co Dublin, Ireland.3
Bridget's occupation: Cook. She first worked under Liz Nolan and later had another girl working for her. at Brewery Road, Stillorgan, Co Dublin, Ireland, from 1945 to 1956.3 I believe Tom and Bridie to have met due to Tom's having lived for a time at the Leopardstown Level Crossing while Bridie worked in the Convalescent Home on Brewery Road. They 'courted' in the general Stillorgan, Sandyford and Stepaside areas.5
Bridget Doyle married Thomas Coughlan on 18 April 1956 at Sandyford Road, Sandyford, Co Dublin, Ireland. The witnesses was Tom's brother an unknown person and Bridie's sister an unknown person.3,6 As of after 18 April 1956,her married name was Coughlan.3 She resided with Thomas Coughlan at Clare House,11 Dublin Road, Stillorgan, Co Dublin, Ireland, from 4 September 1956 to 1957, Clare House, 11 Dublin Road. House was bought from Des Cunningham, an uncle of Colette Moore, q.v..3 She resided with Thomas Coughlan, an unknown person (junior) and an unknown person at Clare House,11 Dublin Road, Stillorgan, Co Dublin, Ireland, from September 1958 to 1961.3 It was one of Bridget's great regrets that no formal picture of her family was ever taken. Around 1964 she had one created for her by using an old shot of Thomas Snr and having it superimposed on a contemporary one of her and son Tommy.5 Bridget Doyle lived after 1982 at 1 Allen Park Road, Stillorgan, Co Dublin, Ireland.5
After 2000 Bridget Doyle had hearing problems; she grew quite deaf, as John her father had been.5
Bridget Doyle died on 25 November 2009 at Elm Park, Dublin 4, Ireland, at age 82. The primary cause of death was pneumonia, but the underlying cause was lung cancer. Her illness was short, lasting from about August 2009 to her death..5
Bridget Doyle was buried on 1 December 2009 at Kilquade, Co Wicklow, Ireland.5,7,8

John, possibly around 1960
John Doyle was born on 7 January 1886 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.3,4
He was baptised on 7 January 1886. Roman Catholic.2
His birth was registered on 7 June 1886. Although born in January 1886, John's birth was registered in June with a false birth date of 7th April.5
John was listed on the roll as a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from April 1894 to 28 February 1902.6
John Doyle was a journalist in Dublin circa 1920 at Co Dublin, Ireland. It has to be said that there is no evidence for this other than the recollections of his daughter Bridget.7
He became engaged to Mary Diffley at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, between 1920 and 1923. Mary apparently had some offers of marriage while working in New York, but she came home on some holidays during her years there. During these holidays, she started meeting John Doyle and on the last of her holidays home she agreed to marry him. This was not a formal engagement as the term is understood today.4
John Doyle married Mary Diffley, daughter of James Diffley and Catherine Kilrane, on 9 June 1924 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland,
The Best Man and Bridesmaid were Mary Kate Reynolds. John had been Best Man at John T's wedding in 1922.
The bride and groom went to the reception in a horse-drawn side-car, and the reception party itself was held in the Doyle house in Clooncarne. For the reception, the bride and groom supplied a half-barrel of porter and lots of soda-bread. The entertainment consisted of music on the accordions..4,8
John Doyle and Mary Diffley lived after June 1924 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.4
John Doyle wrote 'Bornacoola Notes' for The Leitrim Observer. between 1925 and 1940 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. He used to make his way to Carrick once a week to hand in his copy. This could have been on foot if necessary.4 He worked part time as a labourer on the Narrow Gauge railway in from 1930 to 1940 at Dromod Village, Annaduff, Co Leitrim, Ireland. This was necessary to supplement the income from the farm..4
John Doyle replaced Edward Doyle as the Land Holder in 1933 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.9 From 1940 to 1970 John Doyle and Mary Diffley were reknowned for entertaining neighbours.. The Doyle household was a well known spot for ‘ceilidhers’. In effect, everyone and anyone dropped in regularly for socialising. John himself was gifted on the accordion, and some of his children followed suit. This attracted visitors to the house.
In addition, Doyle’s was famous for its card games on Sunday nights. The guests would begin to arrive around eight o’clock. "They might include Joe McDermott, Peter Mallon, Willie McGarry, Mike and Brian McGarry, Berny Reynolds, John Joe Reynolds, Ned Reynolds, Johnny Shanley, John Columb, John Kane and Francie Doorigan. The first ten or fifteen minutes would be spent talking about the latest news when someone would inquire “what about pulling out the table?” The table was duly pulled out, the chairs arranged and the fun started with shouting, banging and laughter interspersed through the rest of the night. As they came to the end of a game there would be a great build-up of excitement with the table getting a few hard bangs. If at the end of a game someone produced the ace of hearts feeling full sure of their trick but was followed by someone with the joker the shouting, banging and excitement would reach a climax. There was always a break for tea halfway through the playing. Mary made sure to have her homemade brown soda hread ready, which she handed around with a mug of tea. It didn’t matter if there were twenty visitors present, there was always more than plenty for everyone. The tea and bread gave the players renewed strength and energy for shouting and banging the table during the ““second half””. There was always great excitement as they came to Ihe last game, which was known in Doyle’s as the ““rubber””. More money was then put out by each person and whoever won that went home a rich person."10 One of John's interests as he grew older was in crosswords, and he avidly did the crossword in the Sunday papers. He also subscribed to Pastime Post, which was devoted to solutions to the crosswords in the Sunday Press and Sunday Independent. My understanding is that John won several prizes for his crosswords; we know that he won a prize of £2/12/8 in 1964, for example.11 In the Leitrim Observer of 2 December 1950 it was announced that John won a copy of the 1951 edition of ''"Old Moore's Almanac", a publication which is increasing in popularity."12 After 1956, and the birth of their first grandchild, Mary Mooney, Mary and John were to play hosts many times to their various children and grandchildren, all of whom visited at different times, especially Lizzie and Bridgie with their spouses and children.11 At some point, probably during his stay in Ireland in the 1950s, Edward bought a radio, or wireless as it would be known normally, for his parents. It seems as if this must have been one of the first 'wirelesses' to be found in Clooncarne, and according to Mary Jo Dennigan, people would visit Doyles' specially just to hear the radio. Naturally for the time, John was considered as the owner of the radio!
The author can remember the radio being placed on a shelf to the right of the window in the kitchen, just above the settlebed. He can also remember it being an object of some suspicion which had to be plugged out at any sign of an electrical storm.4
John Doyle suffered from deafness in his later years. He tried but found it impossible to use a hearing aid.11
John Doyle was replaced as the Land Holder in 1968 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, by Bernard Doyle. Bernard replaced John as the registered occupier.9
A photograph exists of John with his oldest son Edward from around 1970. Edward visited Ireland fairly frequently. I know he returned after his son Sean was born and I suspect that the photo of him with John dates from sometime after that birth (1970) and before John Doyle became too frail.11
John Doyle died on 10 April 1975 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, at age 89.1,4
John Doyle was buried on 12 April 1975 at Cloonmorris, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.11,13

Mary Diffley in New York, around 1920
Mary Diffley was born on 17 June 1891 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.1,2,3
Her birth was registered in the an unknown place Registration District, an unknown place sub-district.4
She was a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, in 1898. Sadly, the school attendance rolls for Clooneagh Girls National School do not exist.1
Mary Diffley was employed circa 1907 at Co Down, Ireland. It seems most likely that any time spent in Down would have preceded her trips to New York. As her ancestors may have come from that area, it is possible she went to work with/for some distant relative. She may have used the money she earned there to pay for her passage to New York. A search of the 1901 Census does not reveal any Kilrane or close variant families in either Armagh or Down.5
Mary Diffley emigrated first in 1908 from Ireland. This is based on assertion in the 1912 immigration list that she previously spent 4 years in New York.6 Mary's occupation between 1908 and 1923 was at 129-135 West 48th Street, New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., as a Hotel Worker.. She is said to have loved her work. I am assuming she retained her employment even during her trips home to Ireland..
Mary Jo Dennigan remembers her mother Mary telling her she spent 9 years working in America, with a few trips home in between. The only record I've found to date on Mary Diffley entering the U.S.A. dates from 1919, but that does not necessarily contradict Mary Jo's evidence. It is quite possible that there is no record of the first stay, and that 1919 is a date for re-entry.2

Mary Diffley emigrated again on 11 September 1912 from Queenstown, Co Cork, Ireland.2,6 She emigrated again on 22 September 1919 from Liverpool, England.6 She immigrated on 2 October 1919 to Ellis Island, New York, New York, U.S.A..6 She was described as 5'6", with brown hair and brown eyes. circa 1919 at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A..6
She became engaged to John Doyle at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, between 1920 and 1923. Mary apparently had some offers of marriage while working in New York, but she came home on some holidays during her years there. During these holidays, she started meeting John Doyle and on the last of her holidays home she agreed to marry him. This was not a formal engagement as the term is understood today.2
In April 1924 Mary returned to Ireland. She married John Doyle in June 1924 so it seems reasonable to assume Mary returned to Ireland a couple of months in advance in order to prepare for the wedding.7
Mary Diffley married John Doyle, son of Edward Doyle and Elizabeth Reynolds, on 9 June 1924 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.
The entertainment consisted of music on the accordions.2,8 As of 9 June 1924,her married name was Doyle.1
Bridget Doyle was due to marry Tim McDermott in 1924, before her brother John married Mary Diffley. The wedding had to be postponed when Tim's mother died. Bridget was already practicing as a Dressmaker and continued working as such from the house in Clooncarne even after Mary Diffley's arrival.
As we have since found the death of Tim's mother took place several years before, the accuracy of this story is questionable.2 Mary Diffley and John Doyle lived after June 1924 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.2 From 1940 to 1970 John Doyle and Mary Diffley were reknowned for entertaining neighbours.. The Doyle household was a well known spot for ‘ceilidhers’. In effect, everyone and anyone dropped in regularly for socialising. John himself was gifted on the accordion, and some of his children followed suit. This attracted visitors to the house.

Mary Diffley died on 8 March 1971 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, at age 79.1,2,10 She was buried circa 10 March 1971 at Cloonmorris, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.7

He resided at Laheen South, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from September 1850 to September 1866, Holding of 8A, 3R and 31P..4,5 Nicholas Doyle was listed as a Land Holder on Griffith's Valuation at Laheen South, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, in 1857.6

His arrears were £6 12S.7 He was still listed as the Land Holder on 29 September 1866 at Laheen South, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, but Rent records show him as lessee of land in Clooncarne.7
Nicholas Doyle was listed as a Land Holder on 24 March 1867 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. as shown by Rent Records. Farm size given as 5A 1R and 17P (Irish). Rent was £6/14/-.
The Valuation Office records show that at the time of the original valuation, the farm in Clooncarne was originally numbered 67A/B but was renumbered to 11.
The family believes that Lord Leitrim evicted Nicholas for a Protestant farmer with an attractive daughter. In 1883, Fr James Keegan, from County Leitrim, wrote: "One of the motives for the eviction of the Catholics [by Clemence] was in order for the people of other religions, or of no religion, who had fair wives and daughters and were not chary of their virtue, to be in convenient distance of the [Clemence] castle." [Desmond Norton, Sexual Intemperance and Money on an Irish Estate in the Eighteen Forties, Centre For Economic Research, Working Paper Series, 2002, Pages 17-18.      We have no information on the names of Bridget Wynne's parents; we know only that when she died in 1885 her stated age was 60 and that she was married in Mohill Catholic Parish. An M Winn was a witness at her marriage and this is likely to be a sibling, and, as Patrick Doil was the other witness, M Winn was probably female, and hence probably Bridget's sister
The surname is relatively unusual. An examination of Griffith's Valuation (dated 1857, over a decade after Bridget's marriage) showed Wynne holdings in Mohill Parish to be:

Thomas Wynne, Corgar (extreme north of the Parish and some distance from Laheen South)
Farrell Wynne, Drumcollagan (just one townland away from Laheen South and separated from it by Kildoo)
     John Winn, Corraterriff North
Bernard Winn, William Winn, Matthew Winn, Michael Winn, Patrick Winn, Drumraghool South. This townland is 4 away from Laheen South.
William Winn, Gortanure South. This townland is 4 away from Laheen South.

Tthe Tithe Applotment Books details of those Winn holdings show us only:

CORRATERRIFF, NORTH; - all land held by Egan, Michael & Co (16-3-0)
     DRUMCOLLAGAN: - no Wynns
DRUMRAGHOOL, SOUTH: writing is unclear but there seem to be 4 Wynn entries - Wynn John Snr; Wynn Patrick; Wynn John Jnr; Wynn Michl
GORTANURE, SOUTH (4 townlands away); Tithe - no Wynns.

On geographical grounds, this would suggest Bridget may have been from Drumcollagan townland, but with no baptismal records available, there seems no way to verify or disprove it.
Bridget Wynne was born circa 1820 at Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. This is based on her stated age of 60 at death in 1885, and assuming some error.1,2
Bridget Wynne married Nicholas Doyle, son of Edward Doyle, on 2 April 1846 at Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Witnesses were M Winn and Patrick Doyle.3 As of 2 April 1846,her married name was Doyle.1 Bridget, as Nicholas Doyle's spouse, resided with him at Laheen South, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from September 1850 to September 1866.4,5
Bridget Wynne died on 24 July 1885 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Bridget died of pneumonia.1,2

Elizabeth Reynolds was also known as Eliza Reynolds. She was born between 1855 and 1860 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. In 1911, Eliza said she was 56, which would give birth year of 1855 but in 1901 she was 43, giving 1858. If we take into account that she acted as a Monitor in Clooneagh National School from 1874, and that the rules stated that a monitor must be at least 13, then the latter end of the range seems most likely.1,2
Elizabeth Reynolds was appointed as a 2nd Class Monitor on 1 March 1874 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.
Monitorial system, also called Lancasterian system, was a teaching method in which the older or better scholars teach the younger or weaker pupils. In the system, as formulated by the English educator Joseph Lancaster, the superior students learned their lessons from the adult teacher in charge of the school and then transmitted their knowledge to the inferior students. By 1806 Lancaster’s monitorial system for the education of poor children was the most widely emulated in the world. The method marked its success through economy (it reduced the number of adult teachers needed) and efficiency (it avoided wasting the time of children who waited for the attention of the principal teacher). Parents of the monitors, however, objected to the learning time their children were losing even though many of the monitors were paid a small weekly sum. It was found that some training of the monitors was necessary, and in about 1840 the movement began that replaced monitors with “pupil-teachers”—i.e., boys and girls who, at the age of 13, were apprenticed for a period of five years, during which time they learned the art of teaching while continuing their education under the head teacher of an elementary school. Some such programs developed into normal schools and training colleges, in which professional and academic education could be continued after the apprenticeship was completed. The rapid rise and decline of the monitorial system in the United States was an important factor in the establishment of free nondenominational school systems.(Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Online Edition, http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/389525/monitorial-system, accessed 14/7/2014.)3 She was employed as a Monitor. between 1 March 1874 and 1 March 1879 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The Teachers' Salary Books show an E. Reynolds in the school, but give no indication that this is Eliza. Eliza would have been obliged to cease being a monitor after 4 years, but could go on to become a junior teacher. Her salary details were:

She was appointed as a 1st Class Monitor on 1 March 1879 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.3
Elizabeth Reynolds married Edward Doyle, son of Nicholas Doyle and Bridget Wynne, on 12 February 1885 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The Bridesmaid was Ellen Molaghan while the Bestman was John Doyle.6,7 As of 12 February 1885,her married name was Doyle.1 She resided at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from March 1885 to 1933.8
She was listed as wife in the household of Edward Doyle in the 1901 census at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. According to the 1901 Census Edward's house was a 2nd class house (2 doors, 3 windows in front) with 5 outhouses.9
She was listed as wife in the household of Edward Doyle in the 1911 census at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.2
Elizabeth Reynolds suffered a fractured femur and pneumonia in January 1933 at Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. She fell in ice during the winter, and was confined to bed for the final month of her life thereafter. After her fall while fetching water from the well, she is said to have been wheeled back to the house in the wheelbarrow of a neighbour, Owen Mahon.10 She died on 16 February 1933 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Elizabeth's stated age at death was 68, giving implied year of birth of 1865. Causes of death were a fractured femur and pneumonia.1,11
Elizabeth Reynolds was buried circa 17 February 1933 at Cloonmorris, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.4

Bridget Doyle was born on 5 September 1894 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.1,2
Her birth was registered on 16 January 1895. Although born in September 1894, Bridget's birth was registered in January 1895 with a false birth date of 1st November 1894.3
As we have since found the death of Tim's mother took place several years before, the accuracy of this story is questionable.1
Bridget Doyle married Timothy McDermott on 2 November 1924 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The witnesses were Peter McDermott and Elizabeth Anne Doyle.1,4,5,6 As of 1924,her married name was McDermott.1 Bridget Doyle was a seamstress (Dressmaker). from 1925 to 1952 at Gortnalamph, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. She carried on this occupation in both her residences, Gort and Mohill. It is likely she wound down in her later years in Mohill.7 They resided at Gortnalamph, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 1925 to 1952..7,8 As of after 1930, Bridget Doyle was also known as Aunt Bee.1 She and Timothy McDermott sold their land at Gortnalamph to Edward Doyle in 1952.7 Bridget, as Timothy McDermott's wife, resided with him Timothy was the listed occupier of Plot 39a from 1953 to 1974, at Main Street, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 1952 to 1968.7,9 Bridget Doyle was a seamstress (dressmaker) from February 1955 to 1970 at her residence at Main Street, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.10 She resided alone at Main Street, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 1970 to 1978, Bridget was the listed occupier until 1980 when she was replaced by a Bernard Reynolds.7,9

Bernard Doyle was born on 25 August 1896 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.1,3,2
His birth was registered on 2 December 1896. Although born in August, Bernard's birth was registered in December with a false birth date of 2nd November 1896.4 Bernard was listed on the roll as a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 31 March 1904 to 30 June 1913.5
Bernard Doyle immigrated on 8 April 1921 to Ellis Island, New York, New York, U.S.A..6 On his immigration record Bernard Doyle was described as of fresh complexion, with Auburn hair and blue eyes; height only 5'4".6 He lived before 28 December 1924 at 271 West 22nd Street, New York, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A..7 and at the time worked as a Waiter.7 He married Helen Kelly on 28 December 1924 at 343 25th Street, New York, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A., The witnesses were Anna Gilston and Patrick Nicholl. We are assuming the latter to have been Bernard's cousin.8,9,10,7 Bernard Doyle and Ellen Kelly appeared in the 1925 New York State Census at 63, 3rd St, Westchester, New York, U.S.A.. Bernard's occupation is given as 'Laborer Golf Links' and Ellen's as 'Dressmaker'. He is said to be 27 and she 29.11 He was listed as head of household in the 1930 census at 18 East Post Road, White Plains City, Westchester, New York, U.S.A.. A Patrick Doyle, cousin, almost certainly of Laheen, was staying with Bernard and Helen.12
Bernard's occupation: Janitor, Public School at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., circa 1930.12 He signed the draft register for World War 2 circa 1940 at U.S.A.13 He was listed as head of household in the 1940 census at 8 Longview Avenue, White Plains City, New York, New York, U.S.A..14 Bernard's occupation: Janitor, Board of Education at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., circa 1940.14 1 June 1943 Bernard applied for the U.S. Social Security in New York. His Social Security Number was 102-20-1741.15 He was employed at an unknown place , New York. His home address remained as 8 Long View.15 He "had a good job and earned great money", according to Mary Jo Dennigan, his niece. The 1950 US Census shows him as a Superintendent of Maintenance at a High School.16,17 On 8 June 1950 Bernard Doyle was a Maintenance Superintendent at a High School in White Plains City. Working under him were his nephews Edward Doyle (as an Assistant Superintendent) and, as a Maintenance Worker, John Doyle.17 He was listed as head of household in the 1950 census at Long View Avenue, White Plains City, Westchester, New York, U.S.A..17
Bernard Doyle and Ellen Kelly lived circa 1953 at 8 Longview Avenue, White Plains City, New York, New York, U.S.A..18
Bernard Doyle and Ellen Kelly visited Ireland once, on vacation in September 1953. They stayed in Gortalamph with Bridget Doyle McDermott. Bernard and Helen are shown leaving Ireland 2/10/1953 and entering New York 10/10/1953. They travelled on M.V. Geordic. Note Bernie Doyle thought this was in 1950. If he was correct, this is not the right couple.19,3,18
He resided at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., circa 1970, At some stage before his death, and after the death of Helen his wife, Bernard went to live with his nephew Edward in New York. The length of his stay there is unknown, but it seems he did leave Edward’s to move into a nursing home, in which he later died..19

Edward Doyle, Passport Photo, 1923
Edward Doyle is a trial to the researcher. A lot of insights into his life can be found until he reached about 35, and from then on he pretty much vanished from sight! The first inkling that he would be a troublesome subject was that on the registration of his birth in April 1888 his date of birth was stated as having been 5th January 1888; in reality he was baptised on 31st October 1887. While this was obviously not Edward's doing, such looseness with dates was to feature regularly in his life in America, with his birth date and year, and even his date of immigration to the States, quoted with regular inconsistency. Of more consequence though is that our last sighting of him in records comes as early as 1923, after which he cannot be found on any Census or similar record. Furthermore, he is said to have married Anne Doherty, a cousin of the woman who married Edwards' brother Bernard. But this latter was thought to be Helen Doherty, and it now emerges that she was Ellen or Helen Kelly. No trace of Edward's marriage can be found and it is to be wondered if his wife's surname was in fact Doherty at all.

Edward Doyle was born before 31 October 1887 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.1,3,2,4
He was baptized at Mohill, at Co Leitrim, on 31 October 1887.4 His birth was registered on 3 April 1888. Edward's date of birth is stated as 5th January 1888 - obviously an attempt to avoid the fine for late registration.1,5,6 Edward was listed on the roll as a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 29 February 1896 to 31 March 1903.7 He was charged with drunkeness on 8 February 1904 at Co Leitrim, Ireland. The newspaper report mentions only Edward Doyle of Clooncarne; it is possible but unlikely that this was in fact Edward Senior.8 On 15 February 1904 Edward was found guilty of drunkeness on the 8th February, and was fined One Shilling and costs. This was a lenient sentence as it was his first offence.8
Edward Doyle emigrated on 21 September 1910 from Queenstown, Co Cork, Ireland.9 He immigrated on 27 September 1910 to Ellis Island, New York, New York, U.S.A..10 He appears to have resided at 455 West 48th St, New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., on 3 May 1911, On his immigration form, a Michael Doyle, born c. 1891, in Mohill, but the stated son of an Edward Doyle, Main St, C-O-S, said he was going to stay with his brother Ed at this address. As there is no suitable Michael and Ed(ward) on the 1901 Census, I am assuming these are the Doyle brothers of Clooncarne..10 He lived on 4 May 1913 at 1268 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., according to the Immigration Record of his sister Mary Anne Doyle.10
Edward Doyle was employed by Pennsylvania Rail Road circa June 1917 at Linden Av, Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey, U.S.A..11 He signed on the World War One Draft on 5 June 1917 at Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S.A..12,11 He began military service on 3 September 1918 at U.S.A.13 He completed Naturalisation Papers on 31 January 1919 at Greenville, Greenville County, South Caroline, U.S.A.. For some reason the application is marked as Spoiled.13 He applied for Naturalisation as a U.S. citizen on 18 February 1919 at Greenville, Greenville County, South Caroline, U.S.A.. On this occasion the papers appear to have been in order.14 He ended military service after 18 February 1919 at Spartanburg, Spartburg County, South Carolina, U.S.A..13
Edward Doyle was a Polisher for illegible employers circa 1920 at New York, U.S.A..15
Edward Doyle married Ann Doherty between 1 January 1920 and 20 January 1923 at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A.. Ann was a cousin of Helen who married Bernard. It is virtually certain the couple had no family. Several attempts have failed to find any record of the marriage but it is noted that when Edward returned to U.S.A. in January 1923, he was recorded as being married.16,3,17 He was a a Garage Foreman on 28 November 1923 at New York, New York, U.S.A..18 He lived on 28 November 1923 at 844 Columbus Avenue, New York, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A..18 Edward was issued with a U.S. Passport by an unknown place on 30 November 1923. He gives his date of birth as 1st November 1889 and his date of entry to the U.S.A. as September 1909; both dates are wrong.18 Between 5 December 1923 and 20 January 1924 Edward visited Ireland. According to his passport application the purpose of the visit was to visit his parents. What is interesting is that on the record of his return to the U.S.A. he is shown as 'married'. Perhaps he came home to tell them he was married. Sadly, there is no record of his wife accompanying him on the return on the 'Baltic' liner.18 He returned on 29 January 1924 to Ellis Island, New York, New York, U.S.A.. There were two items of significance on his return entry record: his marital status (married); and his address on Columbus Avenue, New York.17
Edward Doyle died circa 1960 at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A..19,3

Was it some sort of dodge to enable him sign on for Social Security, or was the business actually run by Annie?15 He was listed as head of household in the 1940 census at 126 West 94th St., New York, New York, New York, U.S.A..13 Michael Joseph Doyle signed the draft register for World War 2 in 1942 at New York, New York, U.S.A..14 He was listed as head of household in the 1950 census at 126 West 94th St., New York, New York, New York, U.S.A.. Michael Joseph Doyle's occupation is given as Proprietor of a Bar and Grill.16
Michael Joseph Doyle died on 16 August 1977 at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., at age 86. Mary Jo Dennigan believed that Michael died on 12th April 1975, just 2 days after his elder brother John. This however can be shown to be not the case. The US Social Security Index and the Longford Leader both show that he died on 16 August 1977.17,9,18,19

Mary Doyle was born on 29 January 1854 at Laheen South, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.1
She resided with her family at Laheen South, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 29 January 1854 to March 1867.2 She lived with her parents from March 1867 to November 1880 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.2
Mary Doyle married Richard Nicholl on 1 November 1880 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland; Witnesses in the Parish register are Jas Nutly and Bridget Diffley.3,4 As of 1 November 1880,her married name was Nicholl.5,6
Mary Doyle and Richard Nicholl lived from 2 November 1880 to 1894 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. This residence is assumed to have been used by them until Richard's death but it should be noted that on his death register entry the word Clooncarreen appears.7 25 February 1897 a Richard Nichols of Tooman applied for relief from the Poor Law Union for his ailing wife. It was noted that the applicant was almost destitute. The Guardians of the Union assigned the case to Mr. M. Wrenn for resolution.
The first point to be made is that we have no prior connection of either Richard Nicholl or Mary Doyle to Tooman townland, but given it is adjacent to Clooncarne, itself adjacent to Clooneagh, it is not at all unlikely to be the correct persons involved. This brings us to the next point: we know that Richard died in April 1899 and all the evidence is that Mary died sometime after November 1890 but, unless her absence from the 1901 Census can be accounted for, before 31st March 1901. This seems compatible with her ailing in March 1897.
We cannot be sure these are the correct people, and an examination of the Workhouse Minutes might help, but in the meantime it is thought likely we are dealing with the Richard and Mary of interest.8
Mary Doyle died after 25 February 1897. No trace can be found of Mary after the birth of her son Patrick in 1894. She does not appear anywhere on the 1901 Census. There is no evidence of her emigrating. Most of her children were in care by 1901. When her husband Richard died in April 1899 his marital status was given as "Married" but can we be certain this is correct. Taking all into account, it is assumed Mary died before 31/3/1901 and that her death was not registered.6

As of 1880, Richard Nicholl was also known as Richard Nicoll according to a church records database. He was a an agricultural labourer. between 1880 and 1890 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.3
Richard Nicholl married Mary Doyle, daughter of Nicholas Doyle and Bridget Wynne, on 1 November 1880 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland; Witnesses in the Parish register are Jas Nutly and Bridget Diffley.4,5
Richard Nicholl and Mary Doyle lived from 2 November 1880 to 1894 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. This residence is assumed to have been used by them until Richard's death but it should be noted that on his death register entry the word Clooncarreen appears.6 Richard Nicholl was shown as land occupier from 1892 to 1902 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Richard died in 1899 and his name was removed and replaced by the Lessor, Thomas Shanley, in 1902. The house had a rateable value of 5 Shillings.7 25 February 1897 a Richard Nichols of Tooman applied for relief from the Poor Law Union for his ailing wife. Richard Nicholl died on 24 April 1899 at Boeeshill, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Richard died of Dyspepsia at stated age of 60. The date and place of death states: "Union Workhouse, Mohill, Clooncarreen." This can be taken to show he died in the Workhouse, but was from Clooncarne. As his family home had been in Clooneagh, it is worth wondering if he was resident in the Doyle household prior to his death.1 Richard's death was registered in the Mohill Sub-district in the Mohill registration district.1

Edward Doyle emigrated circa January 1948. He went to USA on invitation of his Uncle Bernard.3,1,4 He resided at White Plains City, New York, New York, U.S.A., circa February 1948.3,4 Edward's occupation: Hospital Worker at New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., after June 1950.3
Edward Doyle returned to Ireland circa 1952.1 He owned the farm at Gortnalamph from 1952 to 1956. In 1952 Eddie replaced Tim and Bee McDermott as occupier but he was replaced in turn in 1956 by Frank Flynn. Eddie may have lived in Clooncarne while running the farm in Gortnalamph.1,5
Edward Doyle returned on 18 November 1955 to New York, New York, New York, U.S.A..1,6 He lived circa December 1955 at 32 Oakwood Avenue, White Plains City, New York, New York, U.S.A..6 He was a a Store Keeper from 1956 to 1985 at White Plains City, New York, New York, U.S.A..3 At some point, probably during his stay in Ireland in the 1950s, Edward bought a radio, or wireless as it would be known normally, for his parents.
He can also remember it being an object of some suspicion which had to be plugged out at any sign of an electrical storm.1
Edward Doyle married Helen Morris circa 1962 at White Plains City, New York, New York, U.S.A..1
A photograph exists of John with his oldest son Edward from around 1970. Edward visited Ireland fairly frequently. I know he returned after his son Sean was born and I suspect that the photo of him with John dates from sometime after that birth (1970) and before John Doyle became too frail.7
Edward Doyle was ill with cancer in 1994 at Florida, U.S.A..1

John was listed on the roll as a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, from 1937 to 1942.2
John Doyle emigrated circa 1950 from Ireland.1,3 He lived in the U.S. From 1950 to 1981. Johnnie may have moved around a bit. He spent 9 years in California, living with Johnny Shanley of Bornacoola. Further anecdotal evidence places him as having started in New York (perhaps living with his Uncle Bernard) and later moving away. He also spent some time in Alaska. Dates are unclear though..1
John Doyle seems to have returned to Ireland for a holiday circa August 1954. Postcard posted from Cork where Johnny had landed, to Bridie, carries date 9/8/1954 written on it but in what looks like Bridie's hand.4,5 On 4 September 1954 the Leitrim Observer carried an ad. for the sale of a Ford Prefect car, offered by John of Clooncarreen. This could be taken as an indication that John's visit to Ireland was coming to a close.6
John Doyle was paralysed following an accident from 1978 to 1981 at 98144, Seattle, King, Washington, U.S.A..7

John Doyle died on 9 August 1981 at 98144, Seattle, King, Washington, U.S.A., at age 51.      James Diffley was born before 26 March 1854 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. 1901 Census shows him aged 35, suggesting birth year 1866 but 1911 has him aged 56, making it 1855. On his marriage register entry, he is shown as 30, making his year of birth 1860. His stated age at death in 1933 was 79, which would give a birth year of 1854.
Leitrim Genealogy Centre has an entry of the baptism of James Diffely on 26th March 1854, with parents Peter and Mary. As this seems to match other known data, I am assuming it to be the correct date at this point.1,4,5,6,2,7,8 He was baptized at Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, on 26 March 1854. James's Sponsors were John Diffley and Seraph (sic) Burbage. (Note that the parish register for this period is not on the National Library's microfilm and only a transcription has been available.)8 He lived between 1866 and August 1890 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.5 He was a a farmer after 1890 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.2
James Diffley married Catherine Kilrane on 18 August 1890 at Gortletteragh, Cloone, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Witnesses were Michael Diffley and an unknown person.4,9,2
James Diffley lived after August 1890 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Doyle family history has it that the Diffleys lived always in Street. The Griffith Record, though very unclear, does not seem to bear this out. Therefore I am specifically dating this as their residence only after James' marriage.5
He replaced Mary Diffley as the Land Holder in 1892 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.3
He was listed as head of household in the 1901 census at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Also listed was his wife Catherine Kilrane. Also included: Daughter(s) Mary Diffley, Ellen Jane Diffley and Anne Diffley. .
The house is #11 on the census records for Clooncarne, and contained a Stable, cow house, dairy and piggery, as well as barn and shed.5
He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. Also listed was his wife Catherine Kilrane. Also included: Daughter(s) Ellen Jane Diffley, Anne Diffley and Mary Diffley. .
On this census, James' stated age is 56, Kate's is 51. Both have aged 21 years in the past 10.6
James Diffley was replaced as the Land Holder in 1923 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, by Peter Collum.10
James Diffley died on 9 April 1933 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. (an unknown value.)1,11,4,7 He was buried after 9 April 1933 at Cloonmorris, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.      James Nicholl was born on 27 April 1888 at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. James' birth details show him born in Clooneagh, and his father Richard as an Agricultural Labourer. Note that his Draft Card for WW1 gives 1st March as his birth date.3 James was listed on the roll as a student at Clooneagh, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, after 23 February 1897. He only attended for 5 days in total.4
James Nicholl emigrated on 24 April 1909 from Queenstown, Co Cork, Ireland.1 He lived circa 1910 at Long Island, New York, Queens, New York, U.S.A..1
James Nicholl married Mary Alice McFadden on 19 February 1911 at New York, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A..5,6,7
James Nicholl was employed as a waiter. circa 1912 at New York, New York, U.S.A.. James worked from early on in the U.S. as a busboy, which led in time to him becoming a bartender/owner. He worked for Shanleys and/or Doyles, who were cousins of his.8,9 He and Mary Alice McFadden re-entered the United States on 24 August 1912 at Ellis Island, New York, New York, U.S.A.. It seems that James and Mary Alice visiting Ireland briefly, presumably to let their relatives at home meet their daughter Kathleen Nicholl. On his immigration record, James once again he quoted Edward Doyle of Clooncarne as his nearest living relative in Ireland. Incidentally, so did his wife.1 He and Mary Alice McFadden lived in August 1912 at 337 East 42nd St, New York, New York, New York, U.S.A., according to the record of their return to the U.S.A.1 James Nicholl was naturalized in 1915 at New York, U.S.A..5,10 He was a a bartender circa 1917 at New York, U.S.A..10,11
James Nicholl was exempted from military service on grounds of, I think, asthma. on 5 June 1917 at New York, U.S.A.. I believe this to be the correct James. Although the date of birth is wrong, I found no record of any other James Nicholl born in Leitrim in 1888. In addition, this man claims to have a wife and 4 children, which matches with the correct James.      Mick Mooney was born on 8 October 1918 at Kilbrook, Cloncurry, Co Kildare, Ireland.1,2 From 1940 to 1985 Mick's occupation was Railwayman, eventually becoming a Ganger. at Co Dublin, Ireland. He was based in Dublin but travelled around the country to some extent..3 Mick is thought to have played for Cappagh G.A.A. Club. Various newspapers have been searched for any players' listings for the period 1930 to 1945 but no records were found.2
Mick Mooney married Elizabeth Doyle, daughter of John Doyle and Mary Diffley, on 21 April 1954 at Sandyford Road, Sandyford, Co Dublin, Ireland.4,1,2
They resided at 21 Chelmsford Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin 6, Ireland, after 1954.3 Thomas Coughlan and Mick Mooney were good friends, thanks to their connections through C.I.E.3
Mick was an avid G.A.A. man all his life. No Sunday was complete without a match to listen to on the radio or watch on the television. Naturally his great love was for Kildare and no doubt it was a source of great disappointment to him that his beloved county won only one All Ireland, when in New York in 1928 they beat Cavan.
The K.A.R.E. Assocation, together with Clane G.A.A. club, organised a 'replay' of that match in aid of charity. A prize was offered for predicting the score of that replay, and Mick's entry form has been found.
Mick was involved, along with his friend, Dinny Redmond, with the Stradbally Steam Rally.2
Mick Mooney died on 2 May 1992 at 21 Chelmsford Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin 6, Ireland, at age 73.3

Mick Mooney was buried on 5 May 1992 at Palmerstown, Co Dublin, Ireland.2,5
