The author remembers being brought to visit "Mrs Reynolds" in an unknown place every summer. She was a kind and generous woman with just one fault in the then young author's eyes. She had it in her head that cold custard was an absolute treat and every year served up a bowlful - and at the time this was something too exotic for a young boy's tastes.
The author also remembers her as having a saying of her own: "Really and truly, now, John Joe..."²
