     Thomas Diffley was born on 9 October 1867 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland.¹

Thomas Diffley died on 10 May 1890 at Clooncarreen, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland, at age 22. As the age of the man who died roughly matches that of Thomas and as he had a brother named an unknown person , the same name as that of the informant, it is assumed this is the correct Thomas. The informant was his brother Michael Diffley.²

He was baptized at Mohill, at Co Leitrim, on 4 June 1854.³
John Smyth married Anne Diffley, daughter of Thomas Diffley and Mary McGarry, on 18 February 1884 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The witnesses were Peter Muldowney and an illegible other.^1,4 In Thomas Diffley's will dated 8 May 1890 at Ireland, John Smyth was named as executor; The witnesses to the Will were John Diffley and Michael McGuinness.
The disposition of the Will was: "I... do will and bequeath to my son Michl. Diffley the farm of land and effects and I bind Michl. Diffley not to marry for eight years without the consent of the executors or if he did I Will the land and effects to my son William Diffley and Michl. Diffley One hundred pounds. I will to my son Thomas Diffley One hundred pounds I will to my daughter Marcella Diffley One hundred pounds I will to my daughter Eliza Diffley One hundred pounds I bind Marcella Diffley and Eliza Diffley not to marry without the consent of the executors or if the (sic) did the (sic) will get none Marcella & Eliza get a support till provided in marriage I will to my son William Diffley one shilling I will to my son John Diffley one shilling I will to my daughter Anne Smyth one shilling All to be paid off the lands of Clooncarn If any of them dies their portion is to be divided equal between the other three..."⁵ He was appointed executor of the estate of Thomas Diffley, his father in law, on 6 December 1895 at Cavan, Co Cavan, Ireland.⁶ Neither John Smyth nor Anne Smyth is shown as at home on the 1901 Census. Instead, their household is headed by their eldest son Francis. Also missing from the census were the following of their children: Elizabeth Smyth, Mary Ann Smith, Maria Smyth and Margaret Smyth.⁷
He was listed as head of household in the 1911 census at Cloonageeher, Mohill, Co Longford, Ireland. Also listed was his wife Anne Diffley. Also included: Son(s) Patrick Smyth, Thomas Smyth and William Smyth. Also included: Daughter(s) Mary Ann Smith, Marcella Smyth, Maria Smyth and Ellie Smyth.²
John Smyth died on 20 November 1925 at Ireland. He was survived by his widow Anne Diffley.⁸

She was baptized at Mohill, at Co Leitrim, on 23 September 1889.³ Her birth was registered on 4 October 1889. Marcella's birth was registered as the 4th October even though she was baptised on the previous 23rd September. It was registered by her father on the 24th October. The date was obviously entered incorrectly to avoid any possibility of being fined for a late registration.^1,3,2 As of 25 October 1922,her married name was Tilly Diffley.⁴
Marcella Smyth married John Patrick Diffley on 25 October 1922 at Knockadrinan, Mohill, Co Leitrim, Ireland. The witnesses were an unknown person and Mollie Diffley. I suspect an unknown person was John Patrick's brother, while Mollie could have been his sister Mary Anne.^5,6,7

Following the death of John Patrick and Tilly's son Michael in 2012, the original headstone commemorating them was replaced with one including their son.¹⁰
